THE NEW BABY JOURNEY · CHAPTER 9

Your Baby’s First Year Roadmap

YOUR BABY’S FIRST YEAR

Five Stages of Growth and Discovery

These age ranges are a practical guide—not a deadline. Many babies move through skills in a different order, and healthy development often includes normal variation.
1
Newborn baby looking toward a parent

MANY BABIES BEGIN TO

  • Look at faces and make brief eye contact
  • Calm or become alert to familiar voices
  • Lift the head briefly during tummy time
  • Bring hands toward the mouth
  • Begin smiling in response to people

PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Enjoy skin-to-skin contact
  • Offer short, supervised tummy-time sessions
  • Talk, sing, and smile often
  • Read simple books aloud
2
Young baby smiling during tummy time

MANY BABIES BEGIN TO

  • Smile and laugh more often
  • Hold the head steadier when supported
  • Watch and follow moving objects
  • Reach or swipe toward toys
  • Turn toward familiar voices

PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Continue supervised tummy time
  • Place toys within easy reaching distance
  • Respond to coos and early sounds
  • Share colorful books and songs
3
Baby sitting with support and holding a toy

MANY BABIES BEGIN TO

  • Roll from tummy to back or begin rolling both ways
  • Sit with support and improve head control
  • Reach for and grasp toys
  • Bring hands and objects to the mouth
  • Laugh, squeal, and recognize familiar people

PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Offer safe floor play every day
  • Provide toys with different textures and sounds
  • Encourage reaching and grasping
  • Read, sing, and play face-to-face games
4
Baby moving forward during supervised floor play

MANY BABIES BEGIN TO

  • Sit without support for longer periods
  • Babble repeated sounds
  • Pass objects from one hand to the other
  • Respond to their name
  • Crawl, scoot, roll, or move in another way

PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Create a safe space for movement and exploration
  • Play peek-a-boo and simple imitation games
  • Name familiar people and everyday objects
  • Keep reading and talking throughout the day
5
Older baby pulling to stand beside furniture

MANY BABIES BEGIN TO

  • Pull to stand and cruise along furniture
  • Wave, clap, point, or use other gestures
  • Play interactive games such as pat-a-cake
  • Use “mama,” “dada,” or another special name
  • Understand a few simple words or directions

PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Encourage safe standing and cruising
  • Read interactive books and point to pictures
  • Play stacking, hiding, and turn-taking games
  • Celebrate new skills without rushing the next one

Development Is a Journey

The goal isn't to raise the earliest walker, talker, or climber.

The goal is to raise a child who feels safe, curious, loved, and confident enough to keep exploring.

Celebrate progress.
Encourage curiosity.
Trust the journey.
